Alcoa acquires naval advanced shipbuilding technology contract

On March 7, 2012, Alcoa announced a contract worth $2.1 million to develop advanced welding technology to reduce the cost of manufacturing aluminum alloy ships.

The Alcoa Government Affairs team and the New Kensington Technology Center researchers are working on a project to develop high-speed deposition gas-protected metal arc welding technology for shipbuilding to save the Navy's shipbuilding costs. Under the current shipbuilding plan, the total cost savings could be as high as $200 million.

High-speed deposition gas protection Metal arc welding is a semi-automatic welding technique that reduces the number of weld passes, thereby reducing labor costs and improving weld quality. The technology will be used on offshore combat ships and may be used on the Navy's joint high-speed ships and other aluminum alloy ships.

In the past year, Alcoa has received a $8 million R&D contract to develop lighter, faster, stronger and more efficient equipment for the military through the application of advanced materials, design and manufacturing techniques.

3inch Tow Strap 9m

A recovery strap is designed to "recover" a vehicle from the ditch, mud, etc. Nylon recovery straps have loops on each end for ease of use. A Tow Strap should not be used to recover or "snatch" a vehicle that's stuck. Traditional vehicle tow straps are much less flexible and designed only to pull a load that freely moves. The strap's inability to stretch can't absorb energy, which increases the likelihood that it will break. The metal hooks on the ends can then come unhooked and launch through the air at high speeds, injuring bystanders or the vehicles. Using a tow strap with very little stretch is extremely unsafe.
