American Jewish Artist Shanghai Finds China's Grandmother

Shanghai, October 11th: "I can't even remember her name. I just remember that she is my grandmother and she remembers what she was like." 65 years away, USA Jewish people who had drawn portraits of 7 U.S. Presidents including Obama. The artist Peter Marx returned to the "hometown" for the first time and released information here on the 11th to look for Chinese nannies who had been evacuated from childhood in Shanghai.

In the 1930s and 1940s, at least more than 20,000 Jews took refuge in Shanghai and most of them lived in Hongkou District. Born in 1937 in Berlin, Germany, Peter Marx lived with his parents in Shanghai for about 10 years.

In the Shanghai Jewish Refugee Museum, the lean, old-aged American painter pondered and thought about the Chinese nannies in his memory. “My grandmother is an enlightener in my painting. We are similar to her father. As a painter, she teaches me painting every day and brings me with me. This memory is so beautiful that I still miss her very long after I came to USA."

Peter did not have a picture of “grandmother”, but provided the media with an old photograph of his childhood in Shanghai. “I hope she will see the picture and say, I remember this boy and call me.”

In this black-and-white photograph of some years of imprint, Peter and his parents, about 8 and 9 years old, took pictures on the streets of Shanghai. There was a rickshaw driver and his car that couldn't be avoided.

Peter's daughter, Lebold Marx, came with his father for the first time in this memory-surrounded land. She told the China News Service reporter: “When I was young, my father always brought her (Chinese grandmother) and recalled how she taught him. In painting, they are only about three or four years old apart, so they are also very good playmates."

Lebelle said that this is her first visit to Shanghai. When she sees the land that his father and grandparents often remember, he is agitated. "It's like seeing what your family has experienced here."

Why did you want to find "China's grandmother", Peter, who is now influential in the USA, said that because it was "grandmother" he gave him an enlightenment education in painting.
