Bosch develops passenger vehicle hydraulic hybrid system

Following the successful development of the electric shaft drive hybrid powertrain and its application to the Citroen diesel model, Bosch, the world's leading technology and service provider, plans to join hands with PSA Peugeot Citroen to jointly develop a passenger vehicle hydraulic hybrid power system. By introducing two sets of hydraulic units and accumulator assemblies for the system, the hydraulic hybrid system can provide three vehicle driving methods - traditional mechanical drive, hydraulic drive, and mechanical and hydraulic drive. At low loads, the system allows the internal combustion engine to operate in a more economical manner; during braking, the system recovers kinetic energy and converts it into hydraulic energy that is stored in an energy storage device for vehicle use. In addition, the vehicle can be driven purely hydraulically, so that it does not produce any emissions over short distances. The hydraulic hybrid system can reduce CO2 emissions by 30% (European test cycle NEDC), and in city driving, CO2 emissions can be reduced by up to 45%.

Although the hydraulic hybrid system will initially be used in compact cars, this system is equally applicable to other passenger vehicles or light urban transport trucks. In addition, the hydraulic hybrid system is economical, durable, easy to maintain, and has no special requirements for infrastructure, and is suitable for application in various markets around the world. The principle of hydraulic technology in the system is consistent with Bosch Rexroth's extensive use of hydraulic technology worldwide. Bosch and PSA Peugeot Citroën saw the broad prospects for the application of hydraulic technology in the powertrain system, which led to the development of a hydraulic hybrid system and its introduction into the passenger vehicle sector.

In 2008, Bosch and Peugeot Citroën reached an agreement on strategic cooperation in the field of engineering. In 2011, it was equipped with an electric shaft drive diesel hybrid system and the world's first mass-production diesel hybrid model, the Peugeot 3008HYbrid4. In collaboration with PSA Peugeot Citroën, Bosch has developed electric drive components such as electric motors, power electronics controllers, high-voltage generators, and ESP electronic stabilization programs specifically designed for hybrid vehicles. The design concept of the hybrid system has also been applied to the Peugeot 508 (RXH Touring Car Model and HYbrid4 Sedan Model) as well as the Citroen DS5HYbrid4 model. Bosch will provide the relevant electric drive components for the above models.
