Toyota Recalls More Than 100,000 Prius Hybrids Worldwide

Toyota Recalls More Than 100,000 Prius Hybrids Worldwide Japan's Toyota Motor Corporation announced on June 1 that it will recall 105,800 Prius hybrids. The recall involves Japan, the United States and other markets.

Toyota Motor Corp. stated that the cause of the recall was flawed in the steering gear and gearbox of the batch of vehicles. The recalled vehicles were mainly the first-generation Prius models released in 1997.

A spokesman for Toyota Motor Corp. said Toyota’s recall of the Prius model involved 47,800 vehicles in its home market in Japan, while vehicles involving the US market exceeded 52,000 vehicles. Other vehicles that need to be recalled are located in the UK and Germany markets.

It is reported that Toyota launched the Prius alpha five-seat and seven-seat models in May 2011. The model has already been sold in the Japanese market. The launch of this model marks the Toyota Prius as a family series model.

In addition, Toyota plans to launch two new Prius models in early 2012: the Prius C compact hybrid and the Prius plug-in hybrid.
