BEIJING - January 16, 2013 - GE announced the installation of GE's advanced Jenbacher internal combustion engine, a Greenchip-certified cogeneration system, at the new data center built by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) in Changping District, Beijing. The new power station will be the first of its kind in China to meet the cooling and heating requirements of on-site industrial data centers.

The 16.7 MW electric, hot and cold triple-fed power station uses five GE 3.34 MW JMS620 Jenbacher units with an overall efficiency of 85%, which minimizes data center energy costs. At the same time, surplus electricity will be integrated into the regional power grid.

PetroChina is the terminal energy consumer, Beijing Natural Gas Group is the developer and operator of this thermal power station. The project has been approved by the National Energy Administration and will serve as a demonstration project for energy supply to other data centers in China.

"Data centers have special requirements for power and other energy supplies, which is why we chose GE's co-generation technology and its reliability has been validated in practice projects around the world," said Beijing Natural Gas Investment Company General Manager Mr. Zhao Jianwei said, "Our project also strongly supports the NEA's stated goal of improving regional energy security and improving air quality by building more distributed energy facilities."

Changping Data Center Power Station is the largest cogeneration project in China driven by gas-fired internal combustion engines. The data center mainly serves CNPC's new technology innovation base located in the Changping District National Innovation Demonstration Zone. Technology innovation base is the group's petroleum engineering technology research and development, innovation & testing, product development and machinery manufacturing research center. CNPC hopes to expand its network of remote data centers through such exploration to enhance its business operations and emergency backup capability.

This combined heat and power station burning clean natural gas not only brings significant environmental benefits, but also its energy efficiency is far higher than a single thermal power plant that provides electricity. According to the plan, GE will deliver the Jenbach unit by the end of April 2013; the power station will be put into commercial operation by the end of 2013. GE is responsible for delivering advanced power generation and management solutions to industrial data centers around the world. This project shows the breadth of these advanced solutions.

GE Jench's distributor in China, Solomon, signed a contract with Beijing Natural Gas Investment Company for supplying Renbach units. GE and Solomon will also provide engine control systems, gas absorption devices and other ancillary equipment.
