The world's most powerful light HVDC transmission system (HVDC Light) ± 320 kV DC voltage record innovative record - 50% higher than today's record Zurich, Switzerland, May 6, 2013 - ABB, the world's leading power and automation technology group, is re-establishing its technology milestone with its fourth generation HVDC Light transmission system in operation. Thanks to ABB's efforts, this innovation created a new record by successfully raising the voltage source converter (VSC) voltage level in HVDC applications from ± 200 kV up to ± 320 kV. The system will increase the transmission capacity by more than 50% while limiting the transmission loss of each converter station to within 1%. The HVDC converter station at the D? Rpen West substation in northern Germany was recently put into operation to power TenneT, the Dutch-German transmission system operator. The converter station is the receiving end of the DolWin1 transmission line, connecting 80 MW of offshore wind power in the North Sea to the European transmission system and operating at historically the highest voltage level of ± 320 kV. The innovations in inverter technology, the development of new converter valve concepts, the improved performance of semiconductor components and advanced control systems have enabled the innovation to be realized. With ABB's recent development of a hybrid HVDC circuit breaker that removes major technical barriers, this innovation will further advance the interconnection of multi-terminal transmission systems with HVDC networks. Hanspeter Faessler, Business Unit Principal, Grid Systems, ABB Power Systems Business Unit, said: "This latest achievement further strengthens our leadership in HVDC and demonstrates our commitment to this key technology. The ability of the major components of HVDC systems, such as valves, cables and semiconductors, gives us a unique edge in this area. " As early as 60 years ago, ABB took the lead in the application of HVDC technology and participated in more than 90 HVDC projects worldwide with a total transmission capacity of 95 million kilowatts. Light HVDC is a further development of this technology to meet the needs of underground and subsea transmission. ABB, the leader in HVDC Light, has successfully built more than 20 such converter stations worldwide. Light HVDC is the first solution to realize interconnection of long distance transmission lines and power grids underground and seafloor. The technology is being used more and more widely. Its applications include the integration of renewable energy such as land and offshore wind farms, the supply of power to offshore islands or offshore oil or gas drilling rigs, the provision of power supply facilities in land-locked urban centers, and Transnational power interconnection across the ocean. The technology meets the power grid access standards, a variety of applications to ensure that the network connection is stable and reliable. ABB is the world leader in power and automation technology among the top 500 in the world. ABB is dedicated to helping power, utility and industrial customers improve their business performance while reducing their impact on the environment. ABB Group has operations in more than 100 countries and employs 145,000 people. ABB has a full range of activities in China, including R & D, manufacturing, sales and engineering services, with approximately 19,000 employees, 36 local businesses and sales and service network in 90 cities nationwide.
