Federal-Mogul Powertrain Achieves New Breakthrough in Diesel Piston Cooling Technology

On July 19, 2016, the Federal-Mogul Powertrain of Friedberg-Federal Holding (Nasdaq: FDML) in Germany has developed the world's first piston cooling technology, which is at Monoman's leading Monosteel. The head of the heavy-duty diesel piston pioneered a permanently sealed coolant chamber. This technology, named EnviroKoolTM, ensures that the piston can still operate safely with a piston head temperature higher than the current limit of 100°C. It can be used with high oxidation resistant alloy steel and protective coating of the piston head under proper conditions. .

Gian Maria Olivetti, chief technology officer of Federal-Mogul Powertrain, said: "Future diesel engines will have higher combustion efficiency and greater power, so the combustion chamber temperature will be higher during operation, and the temperature limit of the piston head This limits the space available to the engine manufacturer. EnviroKool allows the piston to withstand higher temperatures without compromising strength or durability.”

EnviroKool is the latest development of Federal-Mogul Powertrain's proven Monosteel® technology that achieves superior cooling efficiency with minimal weight. This technique uses a friction welding structure to create a complete cooling gallery in the steel piston, which is then filled with high temperature oil and inert gas during the manufacturing process, and finally permanently sealed with a welding plug. With EnviroKool technology, Federal-Mogul Power Solutions has solved the traditional open-ended oil gallery temperature limitations that must use engine oil as a heat transfer medium.

Keri Westbrooke, Technical Director of Federal-Mogul Powertrain Engineering, said: “If the engine oil is exposed to higher temperatures in the piston oil cooling gallery for a long time, it will lead to degradation and carbon deposition, which will reduce the cooling efficiency and lead to overheating. EnviroKool channel coolant is excellent The high temperature performance allows it to reliably handle rising oil gallery temperatures and standard heats the injector to remove heat from the bottom of the cooler piston head."

Due to the absence of carbon deposits in the cooling gallery, the piston can maintain a stable heat dissipation during its service life. This new technology effectively reduces the oil cooling flow at the nozzle by 50%, thereby reducing the work load of the oil pump, reducing the additional losses, and greatly improving the engine efficiency. In addition to being discharged from the piston through the nozzle, heat can also be conducted through the piston pin, the piston skirt and the piston ring.

Federal-Mogul Powertrain has cumulatively performed more than 1,400 hours of testing on heavy-duty engines fitted with EnviroKool Monosteel pistons. The current development project is in progress and many engine customers have plans to put it into production within the next five years.

Westbrooke concludes: “EnviroKool is the latest technology we have developed on a range of enabling technologies that can help our customers produce lower carbon emissions engines without compromising life, durability or performance. And vehicles."

The Federal Motor Show will exhibit a series of heavy-duty diesel piston products at the International Commercial Vehicles & Components Exhibition (IAA) in Hannover on September 21-29, 2016. The company booth is located in Hall 13, stand C28.
